Declutter Quickly: 10 Things to Toss, Donate, or Sell

A few months ago, I played the Minimalism Game, created by The Minimalists (2 guys who have helped over a very large number of people increase meaning in their lives by reducing the amount of shit they own. Genius, right?).

The 30 Day Minimalism Game is super simple. You get rid of excess stuff for 30 days. On the first day, get rid of 1 thing. Day 2, 2 things. 3 items on day 3. And so on. Donate, sell, or trash. Whatever you do, each material possession must be out of your house (and your life) by midnight each day.

It was an illuminating experience and it helped me to get rid of so much crap, which felt amazing. So, if you want to declutter your home in some quick and easy ways, here is a list to help you get started!

  1. Socks without a match (and if you figure out how this always happens, please let me know!)
  2. Tupperware containers without lids. Or lids without Tupperware containers! (I blame this one on my toddler).
  3. Literally anything without a partner - shoes, earrings, mittens... If you can't find the match, you don't need it.
  4. The clothes you don't wear - spend 15 minutes going through your closet and collect all the items that are too big, too small, or filled with holes (not the stylish holes, obviously). Donate them, have a garage sale, or sell the wearable items on Facebook!
  5. Books you'll never reread. You can donate them to a school or thrift store.
  6. Wrapping paper scraps, flyers, newspapers (if you're old school like that). Recycle that shit.
  7. Old receipts for items that can't be exchanged or returned. Seriously, clean out your entire wallet in 5 minutes and you'll feel so much more abundant!
  8. Old technology you will never use again - laptops, the original ipod, your 7 old iphones.
  9. All the stuff in your junk drawer that you never use. Take a minute to go over it and throw away unnecessary items.
  10. Junk emails. Yeah, this is a technological one but deleting all the spam and the newsletters you signed up for but never read? Total peace of mind that you can accomplish while watching the latest episode of This Is Us.
What do you get rid of when you need to declutter quick?
